Beskrivelse
The Department of Communication and Psychology is pleased to invite all interested scholars to our first WINETASTING SEMINAR that should build new bridges between the areas of semiotics and cultural psychology. This afternoon is also a small marker of the efforts of the past three years by the Niels Bohr Professorship Centre in the Department to foster ties between the Psychology and Communication sides of scholarship. It will take place on Friday, September 30 at Rendsburggade 14, Room 3.529. The event starts with a shared lunch at 13.00.
The topic we have selected is a very rich and conceptually wide one, encompassing perceptual, linguistic, scientific, aesthetic, mythic, etc. dimensions. All the leaders of the informal discussion – Frederik Stjernfelt (semiotics), Robert Innis (philosophy, Obel Visiting Professor at the department) and Jaan Valsiner (cultural psychology) – have a lot to say about these domains of ideas. But we invite all interested participants to join in, with wine glasses in their hand, and develop new connections in the border area of semiotics and psychology. Below are the starting platforms for the discussion.
FREDERIK STJERNFELT - the Cassonne Obra Prima Malbec 2012 Presentation
Generalization and Hypostatization – two aspects of Abstraction and their cognitive requirements
Frederik will look at abstraction as an issue that entails at least two important phases or aspects: the isolation of repeatable features of thought or perception, and the hypostatization of such features to higher-order objects. Each of these aspects also face, however, two requirements: an epistemological and an ontological one. The epistemological one addresses which cognitive abilities are implied in the formation of abstractions - the ontological one pertains to which aspects of reality may be addressed by abstractions.
ROBERT INNIS - The Klüsserather Brüderschaft Spätburgunder Barrique 2014 Presentation
WANDERING IN THE VINEYARDS OF ABSTRACTION BETWEEN FEELING AND FORM
Bob will lead the discussion of philosophical aspects of this border and the many roles abstractive processes play in creating the 'form-worlds' in which we live. Abstractive processes are of many types and are perhaps best not viewed through the lens of a unitary model. The heuristic fertility of different models of abstraction – expressive, perceptual, linguistic, technological, artistic – will be sketched and illustrated by means of recourse to philosophy’s reliance on both semiotics and psychology, with special attention to the relations between affective processes and the creation and grasp of form.
JAAN VALSINER - The Klüsserather Brüderschaft Riesling Auslese 2010 Presentation
MY SELF IN MOVEMENT: SIGNS FOR GENERALIZATION
Jaan will raise the issue of how to make sense psychological phenomenon as these unfold in irreversible time, and how even the most quick human meaning-making events are still semiotically mediated. He will point to the necessary psychological distancing from the activity settings – through abstractive generalization – a theme that was once a key issue for psychology but by present time is mostly treated in semiotics.
NOTE: Please let Morten Kattenhøj know if you plan to attend (as we need to roll enough barrels of the wine to Rendburggade on that lovely afternoon)
